Holiday Home Security Tips

The holidays are traditionally a time of generosity and good-will towards all, yet, unfortunately, it’s also a time when families and individuals should be extra cautious to not fall victim to common holiday safety threats. If a safe home and family is on your Wish List this season, following these simple guidelines you can greatly reduce the likelihood your family’s holiday festivities will be derailed due to accidents or crime.

• Keep doors and windows locked at all times with high quality hardware and, for additional protection, consider using secondary blocking devices such as pin locks.
• If you have a security system installed in your home, make sure it is armed when no one is at home and place stickers or signs on and around your home to make its presence known.
• Make sure wrapped or unwrapped presents are not visible to someone looking in through your windows
• If you have an attached garage, keep it closed when not in use and always keep doors leading in to the house locked
• Do not leave boxes of large or expensive gifts laying out where they can be seen by non-family members
• Make sure to check any electrical decorations carefully for frayed cords or other signs they could present a fire hazard
• Keep sharp, breakable ornaments and decorations away from children and pets
• Educate yourself about holiday plants and foliage you buy or receive as gifts- many are highly poisonous and can be particularly harmful to small children and animals
• Watch out for holiday fire risks such as stockings hung in front of an open fire that can be just as dangerous as they are charming.
• As you unwrap gifts, immediately collect and discard any plastic wrap or bags that might pose a suffocation risk to children and make sure items small enough to swallow or choke on are kept well out of reach.
• Take a holiday inventory of your home by photographing or engraving all your valuable items or at least making a list complete with serial numbers.

During the holiday season, don’t forget to protect those you love and care for the most with a home security system, which can provide a lifeline in case of medical emergencies, fires, and of course burglaries. I personally recommend ADT home security systems. ADT is the leading provider of home security systems in the U.S., with more than 100 years of experience.

Happy Holidays!
